About the Author: John Krell was solo piccoloist and a member of the flute section of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1952 to 1981. After graduating from the University of Michigan, he studied with William Kincaid at the Curtis Institute and later joined him as a colleague in the Philadelphia Orchestra. Mr. Krell has been an instructor of flute at the Curtis Institute of Music, the Philadelphia Musical Academy, Temple University, and the Settlement Music School. His published works include 20th Century Orchestra Studies for Flute (G. Schirmer). Mr. Krell received the Citation of Merit from the University of Michigan, the C. Hartman Kuhn Award, given by the Philadelphia Orchestra for outstanding service, and, in 1995, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the National Flute Association. His long association with William Kincaid as a student, teaching associate, fellow performer, and friend place him as an excellent position to communicate the highlights of Kincaid's legacy to flutists throughout the world.
